An intelligence quotient () test is a way to assess cognitive abilities, and gives you a score from a set of standardised test. It's designed to assess human intelligence in areas such as spatial recognition, short-term memory, mathematics and analytical ability.

There are several to test your IQ, and some of them take longer than others. If you want to take a full IQ test, the best way is to find one online.

But one account on X has shared a quick and easy IQ test which they claim only people with "high IQ" will be able to answer. The question is seemingly simple, but you might find it difficult to answer.

Here is the question: "Which one of the following has four, eight and one nine? A. 88889, B. 4819, C. 888819, D. 489."

In the comment section of the X post there were many different answers, with many believing it could be A, B, C or D.

However, the answer is actually D. 489. Taking to Brainly, one user explained why: T"he one having four, eight and one nine is - 489 (D). In order to get the correct answer a person needs to translate all the options to English.

"It's more of an English problem not maths. In order to get it write you need to translate the maths into English in the following order-

A. Has Four eight and one nine.

B. Has One four, one eight, one one and one nine.

C . Has four eight, one one and one nine.

D. Has four, eight and one nine.

"It's the correct form of English which changed the meaning. A comma can be seen making a lot of difference and giving us the correct answer which is option (D)."

How do IQ tests work?

IQ tests are normed against a large population so that scores can be compared against an average. The average IQ score is set at 100, and most people's scores fall within a range of 85 to 115 (approximately one standard deviation above or below the mean).

IQ tests may include tasks like:

  • Solving puzzles
  • Completing patterns
  • Logical reasoning questions
  • Comprehension and vocabulary tests
  • Mathematical problems
  • Memory recall and spatial reasoning

Some well-known IQ tests include:

  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS): For adults.
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC): For children.
  • Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: A widely used IQ test.
  • Raven's Progressive Matrices: Focuses more on nonverbal and abstract reasoning.
  • Cattell Culture Fair Intelligence Test: Designed to minimise cultural and language biases.
