A controversy has started over the names of the new NCERT books prepared for schools under the new National Education Policy (NEP) being in Hindi. Tamil Nadu was already protesting on this issue and now Kerala has also stood in protest against it. Tamil Nadu has already accused the central government of imposing Hindi. Let us know what are the names of English books of which class in Hindi, are being opposed in these two states.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has given Hindi names in Roman script to many of its new textbooks of English medium. These include English books as well. The English book of class 6 was earlier known as HONEYSUCKLE, now its new name is POORVI. Purvi is a Hindi word, which means east direction. It is also the name of a classical music raga.

The name of the maths book is also in Hindi.
Similarly, the English books of classes 1 and 2 have now been named Mridang and the books of 3 have been named Santoor. Both of these are the names of Indian musical instruments. The same pattern has been adopted for math books as well. The class 6 math book, which was earlier Mathematics in English and Ganit in Hindi, is now named Ganit Prakash in both languages.

What does NCERT have to say?

Amidst the controversy over the Hindi names of the books, a senior NCERT official said that these books prepared for schools have been taught for two years, but no one raised any objection then. Anyway, the names of these books are named after Indian musical instruments and ragas. Like Santoor, Mridang, Tabla, Veena and Poorvi etc. These words are going to make the new generation of the country feel Indian.

NCERT has clarified that the names of the books are in line with the recommendations of NEP and connect the new generation of the country with Indian roots. Those who are protesting against these names, their protest is completely unfair. Anyway, those who have to read these books and those who have to teach them. Everybody likes them very much.
