Flood alert: These areas in Delhi, Noida & Ghaziabad are under threat as Yamuna breaches danger mark

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted another round of rainfall in Delhi and the wider NCR on Thursday, with several weather alerts in effect.

Noida and Ghaziabad are under a yellow warning for light rain and thunderstorms, while Gurugram has been issued an orange alert for moderate showers. Delhi is expected to experience rain and thunderstorms throughout the day, with temperatures likely to hover between 24°C and 33°C.

Yamuna continues to rise
Continuous rainfall this week has caused the Yamuna in Delhi to rise above the 207-metre mark for the fifth time since 1963. By Wednesday night, the river’s water level had climbed to 207.44 metres—surpassing the evacuation mark and nearing the 1978 flood peak of 207.49 metres.


Roads Flooded, Cremations Halted
Floodwaters have inundated Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, disrupting traffic between Majnu ka Tilla and the Salimgarh bypass. The MCD has also halted cremations at Nigambodh Ghat and the Geeta Colony ground because of the flooding.

Low-Lying Areas Submerged
Several parts of Delhi are facing severe flooding as Yamuna waters continue to rise.
  • In Kashmere Gate, waterlogging caused heavy inundation.
  • In Civil Lines, vehicles were submerged, and buildings along Bela Road were flooded.
  • Residents in low-lying areas have been shifted to safer locations.
Relief camps near Mayur Vihar Phase 1 were also reported to be flooded as the river continued to swell. Meanwhile, shopkeepers at Monastery Market evacuated their goods as a precaution against potential flooding.

Heavy Rains Disrupt Traffic Across NCR
On Wednesday afternoon, heavy showers lashed parts of Delhi and the NCR, triggering traffic jams and waterlogging in low-lying pockets, pushing the river once again above the danger level.

A portion of the flyover on National Highway 44 under the Alipur police station area caved in following heavy rains.


Thousands Displaced in Noida
Soaring Yamuna levels and relentless rain have displaced nearly 2,500 people—mostly farm labourers and farmhouse caretakers—in Noida’s flood-hit zones, prompting their relocation to six government-run shelters. About 2,000 animals have also been moved to makeshift enclosures.

Yamuna and Hindon Levels Rise in Gautam Budh Nagar
In Noida and Ghaziabad, heavy rainfall and increased discharge from the Yamuna and Hindon rivers have heightened flood risks:
  • Yamuna water level: 200.10 metres, close to the 200.60-metre danger mark.
  • Hindon barrage discharge: 60,487 cusecs on Wednesday, up from 5,254 cusecs on Tuesday.
  • Hindon river level: Steady at 200 metres, with a danger mark of 205.08 metres.
Farmlands and Villages Submerged
Large areas between Sectors 128 and 155 remain submerged, forcing residents and their livestock to move to higher ground. In Sectors 150 and 155, widespread flooding has damaged standing crops and inundated several farmhouses. Authorities have identified multiple flood-prone villages under close watch, including Momnathal near Sector 150 on the Hindon-Yamuna floodplain, Jhupa, Kanigarh, and Govindgarh in Jewar tehsil, Asgarpur (Jagir) in Bisrakh block, and Dalelpur in Dankaur block.

Traffic Alerts Issued
Traffic was also heavily disrupted on Wednesday. Noida traffic police issued an alert for waterlogging in the underpass stretch between the Expo Mart roundabout in Greater Noida and P-3, which slowed vehicle movement.

IMD Rain Alert for the Week
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a “thunderstorm with rain” for September 4, followed by a “generally cloudy sky with moderate rain” on September 5. Thunderstorms with rain are also expected on September 6, while September 7 and 8 are likely to remain cloudy.
