A few days following the untimely demise of digital influencer Misha Agrawal, her family has publicly confirmed that she died by suicide. On Wednesday, Misha’s elder sister, Mukta Agrawal, shared a heartfelt message on the late creator’s Instagram account, revealing that Misha had been deeply distressed due to a decline in her follower count and was under immense pressure to achieve the milestone of 1 million followers.
Mukta posted a screenshot of Misha’s phone wallpaper, which reflected her overwhelming focus on social media validation. She wrote, “Her wallpaper says it all—her entire life’s purpose was summed up in one image.” Misha, who had approximately 350,000 followers at the time of her passing, had set her sights on hitting one million, a goal she constantly reminded herself of through her phone’s background. Mukta added, “My baby sister had shaped her reality around Instagram, and her sole mission was to reach a million followers and feel appreciated.”
As her follower count began to fall, Misha spiraled into despair, grappling with feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness. Mukta disclosed that Misha had been showing signs of depression since April and would frequently break down emotionally. She recalled Misha saying, “Jijja, what will become of me if I lose followers? My whole career will crumble.”
Mukta tried to reassure her sister, telling her that social media wasn’t her entire identity. She reminded Misha of her academic achievements, including her law degree (LLB) and her preparation for the judicial services examination (PCSJ), urging her to see a broader future. “I told her she could become a judge someday and that Instagram was just a small part of her journey.”
Despite her efforts to uplift her sister and encourage her to detach from the platform’s grip, Misha remained emotionally entangled with online metrics. Mukta added, “I begged her to focus on her joy and let go of the anxiety consuming her—but she didn’t, and now she’s gone.”
Mukta ended the post with the tragic confirmation: “She felt so defeated that she ended her own life. Our family is shattered beyond words.”
Actress Taapsee Pannu responded to the tragic news, writing, “This is something I long feared seeing the obsession of a lot of people around. Fear that a day will come the numbers here will overpower the love of life. Fear that desperate need of virtual love will blind u towards the real love around you. And this instant gratification and validation of likes n comments will overtake the degrees which make u worth much more. It’s heartbreaking to see this.”
Misha passed away on April 24, just two days before her 25th birthday. Her family wrote on her Instagram, “With heavy hearts, we announce Misha Agrawal’s passing. We thank you for the love you gave her. Please remember her always.”
Misha was also the founder of Misha Cosmetics. Her sister later informed customers that orders would be delayed due to this immense loss but would be fulfilled in time.
