Pahalgam: Over 1,700 people have been detained across Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the attack on tourists in Pahalgam, as authorities continue their crackdown. The police operation remains active, with searches ongoing in the region, including Baisaran Valley, where the attack occurred on April 22.
Inspector General of Police (Kashmir), VK Birdi, confirmed that around 1,700 individuals have been detained as part of the investigation. "We have detained around 1,700 people, and the operation is still ongoing. Four terrorists were involved in the attack," Birdi stated. The operation also involved questioning hundreds of pony walas in Pahalgam. Some of them were taken with all-terrain vehicles to help scan the area and surrounding forest. Police are working to identify those who may have been present during the attack. In addition, officers have asked for further cooperation from pony walas to piece together the timeline and identify potential suspects.
Pahalgam remained deserted on Friday, the third consecutive day after the deadly attack that killed 25 tourists and one local pony wala. Protests broke out as many of the local pony walas demanded justice for the victims. "We cannot support such violence. It is inhuman and horrific," said Bashir Ahmad, a local pony wala. The local community, shaken by the tragedy, has called for swift justice and greater protection for tourists.
In response to the attack, the armed forces also demolished the homes of two active LeT terrorists, Adil Hussain Thokar in Guree village of Bijbehara and Asif Sheikh in Tral, Pulwama. Police had earlier identified Thokar as a key suspect in the attack, while Sheikh was believed to have played a role in the conspiracy. Both families claimed ignorance of the terrorists' whereabouts. "My family has no idea where he is," said Yasmeena, a relative of Sheikh. The destruction of their homes serves as a reminder of the government's stance on terrorism, signaling that those linked to terrorism will face severe repercussions.
Authorities have assured the local population of continuous efforts to maintain security and justice. The investigation into the attack continues, and more arrests are expected as police follow leads to bring all responsible individuals to justice.
