Russia has rejected reports that it is planning to provide engines for JF-17 fighter jets being supplied by China to Pakistan, terming such reports as mischievous and baseless.
Highly placed sources told ET that Russia and India have an understanding that Moscow will never supply any defence equipment and hardware to Pakistan that is detrimental to India's interests.
Reports claiming Russia is supplying engines for Pakistan’s JF-17 aircraft are mischievous and fictitious, created to spoil atmospherics before the visit by the Russian president in December, sources said.
The only Russian defence supply to Pakistan in recent years was helicopters for counter-terror operations in 2015-16.
Sources also pointed out that India is the only country with which Russia has shared state-of-the-art defence technology that involved joint production of BrahMos missiles. While Russia had supplied S-400 missile defence systems to China, it did not share certain critical matters pertaining to usage and maintenance of the system unlike India, based on the trust between New Delhi and Moscow.
ET has learnt that senior officials from India and Russia recently met in New Delhi for a brainstorming session on defence-related pacts that could be concluded during President Vladimir Putin's December visit for the annual summit. The agenda for defence partnership includes additional supply of S-400 systems, joint production of S-500 systems and proposal for Su-57 fighter jets with an offer of technology transfer.
Putin will visit India in the first week of December, with December 5-6 being worked out for the annual summit with PM Narendra Modi.
This will be Putin’s first visit to India since the start of the Ukraine-Russia war in February 2022. Putin last visited India in December 2021 when he drove straight from the airport to the Hyderabad House in New Delhi for the annual summit.
In recent years agriculture has emerged as a new area of cooperation and expanding supply of fertilisers to India will also be on the agenda of the annual summit, besides joint production of agricultural products.
The visit will take place in the backdrop of weaponisation of tariffs by the Trump administration that includes an additional 25% tariff on India for purchase of Russian oil. Russia is working to give market access to Indian exporters hit by US tariffs.
The Modi government has maintained that India pursues a policy of strategic autonomy and is guided by national interests with India’s time-tested ties being a pillar of Indian foreign policy. India-Russia strategic partnership continues to be a stabilising factor in Eurasia, contributing to multipolarity and enabling to counterbalance big power ambitions.
