After a prolonged battle with cancer, ' Dennis the Menace ' actor Jay North died at the age of 73 on April 6 at his home in Lake Butler, Florida.
North's friend, writer and producer Laurie Jacobson, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post that mentioned the actor had died "peacefully at home".
"As many of his fans know, he had a difficult journey in Hollywood and after...but he did not let it define his life. He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply," Jacobson wrote.
Jacobson reveled he ended every conversation with "I love you with all my heart."
"And we loved him with all of ours. A life-long friend of Jon's, a brother to Jeanne and a dear friend to me, we will miss him terribly. He is out of pain now. His suffering is over. At last he is at peace," she wrote.
North started out as a child star in 1958, and appeared on various TV shows including “77 Sunset Strip” and “Sugarfoot.” However, it was his lead role in “Dennis the Menace" that defined his career.
The cause of North's death
North's "Dennis the Menace" co-star Jeannie Russell told The Hollywood Reporter that North suffered from colon cancer .
What is colon cancer?
Colon cancer begins in the colon, the first and the longest part of the large intestine, which is the last part of the digestive system. It typically affects older adults but is growing rapidly in young populations too. An unhealthy lifestyle with poor eating habits and consuming less fibre can raise risk of the deadly cancer.
The cancer begins as small polyps that form inside the colon, usually not cancerous. However, some can turn cancerous with time.
Symptoms of colon cancer
Causes of colon cancer
Apart from lifestyle habits, age, family history and some genetic disorders can also raise risk of the cancer.
Also, Black people in the United States have a higher risk of colon cancer than do people of other races. Inflammatory bowel diseases can also make you more susceptible to colon cancer. These conditions include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Having a blood relative who has colon cancer increases the risk of getting colon cancer.
Lifestyle factors
Diet: Eating foods low in fibre and high in fat and calories can put you at risk. People who eat a lot of red meat and processed meat are found to be more susceptible to colon cancer.
Exercise: People leading sedentary lifestyle and not exercising enough are more likely to develop this.
Smoking and drinking: People who indulge in these risky habits may find themselves at a greater risk.
