Bananas, whilst delicious, can be a nuisance as they often ripen quickly, becoming mushy and brown. There are many ways that try and prolong their shelf life, including wrapping the stems with cling film and foil. But one food expert has shared a unique storage tip that promises to keep the fruit fresh for up to an impressive 26 days.
Amy Cross, who posts videos online, shared the method on her TikTok account @amycrosslegacy, revealing exactly what to do in the video, which has gained more than 100 likes.
Amy cuts a banana into pieces while leaving the peel on and stores them in a glass jar in the fridge. In a separate video, she then reveals that remarkably, the banana pieces were still fresh with bright yellow skins, after 26 days.
She said: "These are the bananas I purchased on March 13, and I cut this into thirds and put it into a jar, so they're 26 days old."
Amy initially planned to see if she could keep a cut banana fresh for longer hours, but she far exceeded that mark by gaining weeks of freshness.
"The whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I can get a cut bananas to last 12 hours, and it's been 26 days," she added.
If you're not up for slicing your bananas, keeping them in a cool, shaded area is recommended. Bananas should be kept at approximately 12 degrees, as they'll ripen faster if they're too warm.
A dimly lit room without direct sunlight is the perfect spot for bananas, while a warm kitchen is typically not a great spot for the fruit.
For those who would like to store peeled bananas are recommended to use the juice trick. Once a banana has been cut and exposed to air, it is at risk of quickly turning brown. Therefore, it is suggested to sprinkle some lemon juice or pineapple juice, which can then be used in a fruit salad.
