The autumn season is when we can fill our pots, beds and borders with spring bulbs. They must be planted between September and November so the roots can establish and be ready to fly out of the ground come springtime. The variety of spring bulbs is exciting, so it's time to get planning and planting.
The majority of spring bulbs should be planted three times of the depth of the bulb. This means measuring from the top to the bottom by hand or ruler and then digging holes that are three times this measurement.
So an example a Daffodil bulb is 5cm from top to bottom, so three times the depth is 15cm deep. The planting depth is important as it provides support to the green shoots and flowers.
The spots in the garden we plant spring bulbs is important, we should choose spots with sunshine in the early part of the year. The ground that gets sunshine in late wintertime into springtime will give spring bulbs the best chance to produce a bright flower display.
The Daffodils, Crocuses, Snowdrops, Hyacinth, Tulips to name a few, look so wonderful in springtime sunshine.
So it's time to get the bulb dibber, hand trawl and spade out of the shed and start digging and planting the spring bulbs. Just think of all those amazing flowers next springtime, it makes the effort of filling those pots, beds and borders so much easier.
