Prince William has vowed he and his wife "will always be here to support you", in a moving speech to the Southport community this afternoon. The Merseyside town was devastated by the murders of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last summer, and Kate and William are keen to show their continued support to the bereaved families and the community.
During their emotional return to Southport on Tuesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited the former schools of victims Alice da Silva Aguiar, aged nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven. Their final engagement saw them admire a new commemorative playground that has been created in their honour.
Speaking to those gathered at the playground, William said: "Catherine and I were sadly not able to join you last week when this wonderful new playground had its grand opening. We are so happy to be with you today to celebrate this project and to say how proud we are of the community of Southport.
"The tragic events that unfolded in this town last year still remain difficult to comprehend."
The prince hailed the "vision and determination" of Alex and Sergio, Alice's parents, who wanted to create a special playground in memory of the girls.
He said: "This playground is a symbol of how the community have come together to create such a positive space for the pupils of this school - a symbol of remembrance and resilience, a testament that love will always overcome tragedy. Many lives were changed on that terrible day - including countless members of this school community."
William thanked the teaching community at both Churchtown Primary and Farnborough Road for going "above and beyond to help heal this incredible group of young people".
Wrapping up his moving speech, the future King said: "To Alex and Sergio, Lauren and Ben, Jenni and David - you are parents united in grief. You have faced such horror - but from that you move forward with grace and fortitude - creating the most remarkable legacies for your girls. We will always be here to support you.
"To everyone impacted on that day you will never be forgotten. Enjoy this playground. Be brave, be joyful and be kind."
