The Duchess of Edinburgh is said to have become one of Princess Kate's "firm friends" and is someone that she can "share the ups and downs of royal life with". The two royals both experienced a middle-class upbringing, prior to joining the Royal Family through marriage.
Duchess Sophie, 60, married Prince Edward back in June 1999 and has since become, like Princess Kate, one of the Firm's much-loved members. Princess Kate, 43, married Prince William in 2011 - and has since been seen to grow in confidence as her role as the future Queen.
As mum to Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven-year-old Prince Louis, Princess Kate is said to have admired the way that Sophie and Edward have raised their two children, Lady Louise Windsor, 20, and 17-year-old James, Earl of Wessex. The families also live within close proximity to one another.
Proudly watching their husbands take part in the ancient procession, Sophie and Kate were seen sharing a joke or giggling at this year's Garter Day back in June.
Just months after her cancer diagnosis, Kate made a rare appearance at the Cenotaph for last year's Remembrance Sunday - where Sophie was seen placing a reassuring hand on her back.
Just weeks later, at Kate's Christmas Carol concert, Sophie was seen sat beside her for the emotional service.
As reported by the Mirror, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: "It's sometimes hard to remember that Sophie is Catherine's aunt by marriage, they seem more like sisters. I think they have a real mutual affection and friendship.

"Sophie has been there for Catherine from the start as a mentor and perhaps someone she can share the peculiar ups and downs of royal life with.
"They are two women who have come from middle-class backgrounds to assume uniquely senior roles in the life of the nation.
"I think William will be very grateful to have Edward and Sophie alongside when the time comes for him to be King. With no Harry to lean on, he will appreciate the support of his uncle and aunt, and be grateful that they are willing to bear their share of the considerable workload."
