The Piano returned to Channel 4 on Sunday (13th April) evening, but fans were left disgruntled by a significant change in the series.
The unique competition challenges amateur pianists to perform at popular UK train stations for a chance to play at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead.
In the premiere of the third series, host Claudia Winkleman greeted the hopefuls at London's Liverpool Street station. However, this year saw a shake-up as judge Lang Lang departed the series, replaced by renowned American musician Jon Batiste.
Within minutes of the episode, several viewers expressed their annoyance at the change as Jon and fellow judge Mika critiqued the first performer, 12-year-old Alisa.
One fan vented their frustration on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "This Jon Batiste fella is already irritating the hell out of me. Bring back Lang Lang." Another viewer complained: "This new loud mouth presenter Jon Batiste is getting on my nerves already."
Another viewer confessed: "In this format #thepiano doesnt work. Without Lang Lang. Too much talking.
"Now the surprise element has gone its mainly average pianists wanting to be famous. I guess they'll save the best pianist til last."
A third disgruntled viewer commented: "Yapping ratio has gone up exponentially. Everyone blethering on, including OVER the performances."
Despite the complaints, there were still plenty of fans who gave the show's new judge a warm welcome.
Viewers have been swept away by the new energy on #ThePiano, with one fan proclaiming: "Was worried with no Lang Lang new replacement wouldn't fit as well ...but ....Jon Batiste doing a great job, great feel good vibes #ThePiano brings."
Another avid watcher expressed their adoration, tweeting: "Loved #ThePiano before. I love it now, I adored the chemistry between @mikasounds and @lang_lang and they've hit the mark again with @JonBatiste. Cried already."
Yet, amidst the plaudits, there was tension in the air as fellow judge Mika cautioned Jon not to count his chickens too early after praising first performer Alisa as a breakout talent.
Mika's advice proved prescient when later acts, including Chris's moving tribute to his late father, rivalled Alisa's star turn.
Despite the cautionary words, Jon's judgement shone through, with both Alisa and 17-year-old Mia securing spots in the grand finale, validating his positive instincts.
The Piano series 3 continues Sundays at 9pm on Channel 4.
