While we cannot deny Rhodes' incredible rise in WWE over the past few years, the pro wrestler recently completed a year as the Undisputed champ, as his fans recalled the iconic moment in Rhodes' career of defeating the Tribal Chief to acquire this monumental victory. As The American Nightmare is prepping to defend his year-long reigning title against John Cena in just a matter of days, he recently spoke about the authenticity he tries to maintain in the industry, which mainly runs on scripts.
Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes speaks about his WWE persona
Rhodes is one of the biggest names in the WWE wrestling scenario, but to be an elite superstar in the company, a wrestler needs to have more than just incredible wrestling skills. A wrestler’s gimmick and appeal are equally significant to make them stand out from the crowd. Recently, Rhodes talked about the authenticity he likes to maintain to be true to his character, whether inside or outside the ring.
While speaking on , Rhodes denied being limited to playing a character and emphasized being more of himself than anything else that he is not. The reigning champion also shed some light upon the warmth he receives from his fans, even from places like Chicago or Barclays Centre, known for being resilient towards wrestlers.
Additionally, Rhodes also stated the significance his father's wrestling legacy plays in him being a household name. He stated, “Everything about me is… I don’t have a character, right? I am me. This is… and I’m really happy that it’s worked out. But I’m always expecting, like, yep, today’s the day. Barclays or something, you know, like—or Chicago’s always notoriously a tough wrestling market. And then in those places, they’re like, ‘Nah, he’s cool.’
He further added, I don’t know the formula. I think there’s an element of being in the family and the love they had with my dad and the connection we have. I think it’s ‘cause I took them on the full ride from the time I was back at WWE. Also when we, when we do the suspension of disbelief in what we do… everything about me is real.
Rhodes concluded by stating, “ I’m not reading someone else’s words. These are my words. I’m not playing some role. It’s just me out there—what I think, how I feel, how I speak. And maybe that’s why it’s connected. I never know, but it still surprises me every night when they’re with me.”
While WWE is known to rock heavily scripted moments and over-the-top characters, Rhodes led a path more rooted in being real.
