The Seattle Kraken are bringing a touch of Hollywood to the NHL with a new “Player of the Game” award inspired by the F1 blockbuster movie featuring Sonny Hayes . This innovative award merges hockey excitement with pop culture, offering fans a unique way to celebrate standout performances while connecting the world of sports with cinematic flair.
Seattle Kraken bring F1 movie-inspired Sonny Hayes helmet to the ice
The concept for the helmet award originated from Jerry Bruckheimer , famed producer of the F1 film and majority owner of the Kraken, after a suggestion from head coach Lane Lambert. With rights clearance from the movie studio, Bruckheimer teamed up with Bell Racing to produce an oversized replica of Sonny Hayes’ iconic helmet, designed to fit any Kraken player.
Unlike traditional racing helmets molded for individual drivers, this helmet is extra-large and wearable for hockey athletes of all sizes. It features the APX GP team livery, Hayes’ number seven, and the movie’s signature playing card design, seamlessly transferring a cinematic icon onto the ice.
Bruckheimer emphasized the fan experience, stating, “I just want to see the fans having a good time. When they made the helmet for Brad, the interior was molded to the exact shape of his head/ In racing, that’s how they do it. So, in this case, we had to get an extra special, extra-large helmet made so that it would fit the head of every player. So, it’s the exact helmet that we used in the movie. It’s just a larger size.”
Sonny Hayes Helmet celebrates underdog spirit and fan engagement for Seattle Kraken
Kraken president of hockey operations, Ron Francis , added, “It's a really cool idea, I mean, they're really cool helmets.”
The helmet also embodies the underdog spirit. Sonny Hayes’ rise to victory in the movie mirrors the Kraken’s own journey in the NHL. “Look, in the movie it was an underdog driver, right? And we have an underdog team. And he won.” Bruckheimer noted.
With the F1 film grossing over $600 million worldwide, adapting its iconic helmet provides a unique marketing angle and deepens fan engagement. Every standout performance on the ice now becomes a cinematic moment, making the award both meaningful and visually striking.
By introducing the Sonny Hayes helmet as the “Player of the Game” award, the Seattle Kraken successfully merge Hollywood excitement with hockey tradition, creating a memorable ritual that will resonate with fans and players alike.
