India-US discuss trade: Foreign secretary Vikram Misri meets under secretary Jeffrey Kessler

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday met US under secretary Jeffrey Kessler to strengthen India-US cooperation in critical and emerging technologies . The two officials participated in discussions aimed at convening the India-US strategic trade dialogues early to deepen ties in the technology and trade sectors between the two countries.

Sharing a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Washington wrote, "Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Under Secretary Jeffrey Kessler to advance India-US cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. They also discussed early convening of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue to deepen tech and trade collaboration."



Vikram Misri is in the US from May 27 to 29 and is scheduled to visit top officials to advance bilateral collaboration. Misri’s visit to the US follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to the US earlier this year.


During his visit in February, the US and India jointly launched COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), which aimed to inspire bilateral collaboration across various fronts.

This comes amid global uncertainties caused by Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. Trump has announced 26% tariffs on India, which are on hold till July 9, as he put a 90-day pause on imposing tariffs back in April.

India aims to conclude trade agreements with the United States before July. The finance ministry's monthly Economic Review suggests that a successful bilateral pact could transform "challenges into economic opportunities."

According to IMF’s World Economic Outlook, India’s real GDP growth for FY26 is projected to be 6.2 percent, 30 basis points lower than the January estimate, amid global economic uncertainties.

Commerce minister Piyush Goyal was in the US last week to advance trade talks, and officials from the US are scheduled to visit India in the coming weeks.
