The governor of Mexican state Baja California , Marina del Pilar Avila , said the United States has revoked tourist visas from her and her husband without specifying any reason. ”I fully trust that the situation will be satisfactorily clarified for both of us,” Ávila said on X. A spokesperson for the US Embassy told The Associated Press that visa records are confidential and that the details of individual cases cannot be discussed.
“I inform all citizens of Baja California that this situation is taking place in a complex binational context that requires my composure and prudence. I've said it repeatedly: governing my state is a source of pride, and I will continue to do so with my heart in mind and a clear conscience. My government will continue working tirelessly to address the challenges we face for the benefit of the people of Baja California,” Abila wrote in a social media post.
Avila's husband Carlos Torres, who is also a politician and an active member of the Morena party, said the visa revocation does not represent an "accusation, investigation, or formal indictment by any authority" not in Mexico, not in the United States. “I was notified by US Consular Authorities about the revocation of my non-immigrant visa, a measure that, as is with many people in similar contexts, responds to internal arrangements of the State Department. It should be noted that my conscience is calm and I am sure that the situation will be resolved favorably," the husband said.
US and Mexico are tangled in a border row as US claimed Mexico sends illegals and drugs into the US. Baja California is a border state of Mexico, sharing its border with California. President Trump recently said that he suggested sending US troops to Mexico to combat the drug trafficking but Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum refused the offer.
“If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, we would be honoured to go in and do it. I told her that. I would be honoured to go in and do it. The cartels are trying to destroy our country," Trump said. Sjeinbaum said she would never accept the presence of US troops on its territory.
